Residents reminicse about the Princess, Mount Dora's last movie theater before EPIC's arrival

Orlando Sentinel

MOUNT DORA — Janet Marks had a royal good time watching the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll on the big screen at the Princess Theatre.

“I remember standing in line for an hour to see Elvis Presley’s first movie,” the 73-year-old Zellwood resident said of going to see the 1956 movie “Love Me Tender.” “The line went all the way around the corner. … It’s something that sticks out in mind.”

The Princess, at 130 W. Fifth Ave., closed as a movie venue in the 1970s and is now vacant. Mount Dora hasn’t had another theater since — until now.

Mount Dora wants flood-prone section of SR 46 raised

Daily Commercial

SORRENTO — Mount Dora officials are joining Lake County government in encouraging The Florida Department of Transportation to raise a section of State Road 46 to prevent a repeat of the flooding that occurred after Hurricane Irma in September.

The DOT is rebuilding SR 46 to serve as a feeder road from Mount Dora to the Wekiva Parkway, but local officials are concerned because the plan does not include raising a low-lying, 3/4-mile section of the road above FEMA’s 100-year flood elevation, leaving it susceptible to flooding when the area is pounded with torrential rain.

Mount Dora Destination Wedding

This town has it all! For a destination wedding, no city rises to the occasion as well with so many component services to make for dream come true event. With beginning to end wedding planning and decorating, extraordinary floral design, a trolley to transport guests to wedding venues, a glorious old mansion for a ceremony, personalized officiating, a historic train depot banquet facility, five star catering, outdoor patio tenting, a sea plane send off for the bride and groom and a luxurious bridal suite at a beautiful B&B, the bridal party as well as guests have an over the top, memorable event. And with the numerous leisure activities available, all involved have fun in the days leading up to the main event.

This was just the case for a Massachusetts couple. On a visit during a Mount Dora Christmas Event, they were not only photographed but were engaged in Santa’s sleigh.  Weeks later…Byron Faudie of Photo Booth by eSports Photo located Steve and Kathleen so that the Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce could invite them back…not just for a visit, but to me married here!  Again, Kathleen said yes.  With some strong family ties to Mount Dora the idea was a perfect fit.

Through partners of the chamber, Mount Dora was able to, in-part, sponsor their April 14 wedding. Many, many thanks goes to these chamber partners for their time and kind generosity to the bride and groom as well for helping to showcase our remarkable Mount Dora for destination weddings.

'The Yearling' author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings to be celebrated in Mount Dora

Orlando Sentinel

MOUNT DORA — Leslie Poole first read Florida original Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ masterpiece “The Yearling,” about a boy and his pet deer, when she was 12.

“It carved a place in my memory and heart,” Poole, executive director of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Society, said of the book for which Rawlings was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1939. It took Poole a while to get around to Rawlings’ next book, “Cross Creek,” a 1942 memoir about the author’s life in the state’s backcountry.
