Villegas takes over for English as Mount Dora Chamber director

The Mount Dora Area Chamber of Commerce is starting the New Year with one major change – a new president at the helm.

Ray Villegas, a graduate of Philadelphia’s Drexel University, with a degree in accounting and business administration, took over the position last month after former President Rob English left to lead the Mount Dora Community Trust as its new executive director.

MDCA overcomes halftime deficit to beat tenacious Tavares

MOUNT DORA — Many Mount Dora Christian Academy fans might’ve expected the Bulldogs would cruise past Tavares in Tuesday’s clash between the longtime rivals.

After all, MDCA entered the game with a 12-2 record and Tavares sported a 1-8 mark.

But, as is often the case, records mean little when rivals meet and the adage certainly applied on Tuesday.

MDCA overcame a halftime deficit behind 14 second-half points from Edwin Chatman and the Bulldogs pulled away after intermission for a 65-54 win in front of a raucous crowd at the MDCA gym.

Lake County to break ground on $7.8 million no-kill animal shelter

Lake County is about to break ground on a 31,000-square-foot, no-kill animal shelter in Tavares, officials announced Wednesday.

The new facility — projected to cost $7.8 million — is being funded by a voter-approved countywide 1-cent sales tax for road repairs, school improvements and other infrastructure projects.
